On his 25th birthday, Dilan Patel sat with a haematologist and heard the words stage 4B Hodgkin's lymphoma. Two weeks earlier he had felt a firm lump under his arm during martial arts training and gone straight to his GP. Before that diagnosis, Dilan had already lived a very different story, a shy, overweight child who hid under the dining table when guests came round, a teenager who bought a pair of dumbbells at 15 and taught himself to lift, and a young personal trainer still working out the basics of nutrition.

Chemotherapy brought hair loss, collapsed veins and constant nausea, but Dilan paired it with an alkaline diet, breath work, meditation and a course of herbal medicine alongside his hospital treatment. The diagnosis became the turning point of his life. He walked away from a high-paying, high-pressure recruitment job to train people full time, a decision friends and family thought was reckless at the time. "I'm just going to do what I want to do, what makes me happy, and I'm not going to compromise that for anyone," he says of the shift.

Today Dilan runs DNA fitness, working mostly with women on mindset and identity rather than exercise alone, and lives in the UK with his wife Ren and their daughter. He speaks with The Dad Project about illness, fatherhood and rebuilding a life from the ground up.

Quotes

"I genuinely feel I got the cancer that I did because that was my body trying to give me a wakeup call."

This Episode Is About

Dilan Patel talks about being diagnosed with stage 4B Hodgkin's lymphoma on his 25th birthday and what chemotherapy actually looked like, from the hair loss to the diet changes he made alongside hospital treatment.

He talks about the childhood that came before it, being an overweight, anxious kid who hid from guests under the dining table, and how weight training became the first thing that gave him confidence.

The conversation moves from the diagnosis itself into how it changed his career, his marriage and his relationship with his own father, and into the work he now does helping people separate what they think they want from what's actually going on underneath it.
